Yeah Boston Legal was pretty good. I liked the character development on that show, which is one of the things I'm starting to really like about Modern Family. Same thing with 30 Rock...but 30 Rock is hit or miss sometimes.

I'm with "Anon" on Boston Legal! They should have never cancelled that show. It was entertaining and usually very topical with regards to a current news story, debate, issue, etc. I began watching Modern Family because Julie Bowen (actress) is a carry over from Boston Legal (and I think she's hot). I've never been a huge sitcom fan as I see the humor in them too "set up" and predictable, but most of Modern Family's humor is situational and based on behavior and relationships between the characters. I still have a void from the well written/acted/casted/ Boston Legal so if you know of a show that will sometimes push the limits and hold an adult attention span for an hour a week, I'd love to know about it. So, since "You are what you watch" I guess a part of me is missing without this show, but a new part of me has developed with Modern Family. A fair trade? Not in my book, but it will do as a temporary patch.

Well, I don't watch any of the crime shows because, well...quite honestly, it pisses me off that people think that a crime can happen, get investigated, solved, and prosecuted in 48 hours. I'm sure it's quite entertaining to watch for the average viewer, but it really isn't all that great (sometimes) for someone in one of those fields. LOL (I DO, however, miss Boston Legal!! THAT show OBVIOUSLY didn't depict actual courtroom antics and was smart and funny.)

I do watch Modern Family because it's one of the few shows that makes me laugh out loud. With everything crappy that goes on today, it's nice to sit down for 30 minutes and just laugh. I know that it doesn't really depict the average family, but it kind of depicts a few variations as one big unit. The writers are great and the casting director picked some great actors for the parts.

I enjoy Lost because you really have to stop and USE YOUR BRAIN sometimes. I know.....there aren't many shows that force you to do that, but I enjoy the ones that do. I like having to think back on previous shows to try and figure out storylines. (But, then again, I was the nerdy kid who loved the books where you got to the end of a chapter and had to pick one of two storylines to go with in order to figure out which chapter to go to next!)

I don't know if any of my mindless ramblings will help you with your writing, but it's here for you nonetheless! ;-)

More or less. I was going more how "average" people are depicted on tv, movies, etc and how viewers, readers etc relate to them. Think the Cosby family, the Connor family, the old ABC family hours on Fridays (Full House, Step by Step), and compare those with today. Modern Family, Family Guy, The Middle, Jersey Shore (vs old Mtv Real World), etc. What do these shows say about how writers view Americans and how we can or can't relate to their shows and stories?

Carter-think of the horror themes of the time to represent what the current scare of the moment is. I came across this one day watching a documentary on Godzilla. Godzilla was created after Hiroshima/nuclear bomb scare. He represented what people thought was going to happen based on what was being reported in the news. With the blossoming of the AIDS epidemic and super viruses, zombie movies came out and are enjoying a resurgence. If we have any more apocalypse movies we can thank the "climate change" we are all hearing about.
Was this what you were talking about? Like I said not my own idea by a long shot but stil...
