Hiatus

As most of you know I have a wedding coming up here shortly.  I haven’t been as focused on my writing as I have been in the past and it’s been kind of lackluster…to say the least.  Page views have been down since switching sites as well.  That probably has a little bit to do with the content not being as interesting too.  So long story short, starting today the site will be on hiatus.  I’m not sure how long I’ll hold off on posts, but it will probably be just long enough to make it through October.

I appreciate all of you that continue to check out the new posts and send emails.  I hope you’ll continue to read and get back to posting comments.  Please take the next few months to go through the archived posts to review some posts you may have missed.  Thank you again.

Why not me?

I love seeing and hearing stories about people striking it rich through some kind of fluke.  They hit the lottery, they find some kind of treasure in their attic behind an old painting, or they have some piece of art, jewelry or furniture that turns out to be a rare gem.  That sounds so nice.  It’s an instant influx of money if you’re willing to part with the rare find, and they always are.  But how rare is it to have something like that happen?

It seems like a modern day fairytale or tall tale.  It’s this attainable thing that’s just out of reach of the average person.  Every once in a while we pick up a scratch off or a lotto ticket just to try our luck.  It’s $1 with a chance Continue reading

Sticks and stones

I love Albert Einstein Quotes.  One of my favorites is, “I don’t know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”  It’s funny but at the same time questions our dependence on technology and nuclear weapons.  I think about it when I think about how fast and how far we’ve come with technology.  Take the cell phone industry for example.  10 years ago we were just getting used to the idea of texting and send/receiving email from our phones. Now PDAs are the most popular phones selling.  But what has it done for our actual communication skills?

For the large majority of people technology has made it possible to carry on relationships, meet new people, say things they otherwise wouldn’t, etc.  It’s a lot of power at our fingertips.  We can type and send out our thoughts instantly.  As soon as we have those thoughts we can Continue reading

The Road Not Taken

“I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”  Robert Frost

The end of this poem really strikes a chord with many people.  It gives them motivation to try new things.  It gives them hope between choosing two paths in life.  And it encourages adventure.  The road less traveled…does it have more growth, more obstacles, a better outcome?  Is it going to be the easier road or the harder road to traverse?  In any case, we all have to choose our paths in life.  Do we go the safe route or the choose the new route?

I’m at a potential point in my life where two roads diverge.  One road leads Continue reading

Lowering our standards?

For most of my life, or at least as long as I can remember, I’ve been a strong advocate for anti-censorship. I’ve never had a problem with “bad words,” with only a few exceptions. They’re all just words and they only have the power that we give them. Lately though I’ve been kind of having second thoughts about that and a whole host of other things. It seems I’m becoming more conservative in my advancing age. I look at the way people dress, what they drive, what they say, and their conduct and wonder if we’re all, as a society, lowering our standards of what’s acceptable.

I don’t mean that to sound judgmental or condescending.  It’s just hard to look at fashion, television, pop culture, etc and see anything remarkably classy or what would be considered old school conservatism.  And that’s a weird thing for me to even want; conservatism…me?  I’m by no means conservative or classy, but I think I hold my own and at least respect myself enough to dress and act properly in public.

It seems to me that we all keep pushing the envelope to see what we can get away with more so Continue reading
