On to the next one…

Posted by theaveragecarter on March 10, 2010

“I move onward. The only direction.”  Jay-Z

I was gonna keep going with Monday’s post but honestly, no one is remotely interested. It was something that caught my attention and something I wanted to write on, but it’s honestly talked about all of the time.  And we all get it.  Everything’s bad and it needs to be changed.  But no one wants to deal with that kind of change.  Contentment in the way that society is, is just easier to handle. It’s made us fat, lazy people seeking instant gratification and thriving on others’ failures.

Nah, we won’t talk about that today because I don’t think anyone is ready to deal with that yet.  Instead I’ll move on to the next one.

Today would have been my 9 year wedding anniversary.  However Read the rest of this entry »

You Are What You Watch?

Posted by theaveragecarter on March 8, 2010

I used to find it amusing that while watching shows you would see certain types of advertisements for products you wouldn’t see while watching others.  You see advertisement for items during The Price Is Right that you wouldn’t see during Family Guy for example.  But this shouldn’t be a big surprise.  Advertising companies are searching for target audiences to promote their products.  What better way to hit your demographic than by displaying these products during shows that cater to group of viewers?

Well I never quite put it together until a few years ago, but that’s what networks do for television programming as well.  Their programming to specific sets of demographics and the larger the demographic, the larger the viewership and ratings…which equals more advertising dollar signs.  It left me wondering why the “smart” shows kept getting cancelled and replaced by LCD programming.  Well…the larger the demographic… Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve got nothing.

Posted by theaveragecarter on March 5, 2010

Not literally.  I have a lot.  But just today.  I have nothing new for you.  I promised to keep posts up to date, and Fridays are no exception.  So here’s the post.  There’s nothing to see here.  I had two people help with input for next week’s topic so I’ll be hoping for more feedback once I post it.  Hopefully it will encourage some kind of response and commentary.  If not, that’s ok.  As always I appreciate the continued readership and both private and public messages/comments.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  It’s supposed to be beautiful and warm here in Florida for a welcomed change.  See you all back on Monday.

Superman

Posted by theaveragecarter on March 3, 2010

On Monday I asked for some help on picking out some things from tv shows and movies that reflected views on our on society.  So far I haven’t had a bite yet.  It’s not really some big scientific or anthropological study.  I’m just interested in seeing what everyone else picks up from what they watch or read.  It’s something that’s been on my mind lately after a few conversations I’ve had about LCD programming.  But there is a beginning to all of this and I’ll explain that now. I need your input

Posted by theaveragecarter on March 1, 2010

This week’s emphasis will be on getting ready for next week’s posts.  So today’s post will be relatively brief.  I don’t spend as much time watching tv as I used to which makes any input you have that much more valuable.  My concept is really simple.  Stereotypes are everyone in the world, but no where moreso than in the media.  This includes all forms of media from tv, radio and movies to books, magazines and even comic books.  The goal is to look at how those markets perceive the average person’s race, gender, sexuality, etc.  How are they depicted in a sit-com?  What about in a horror movie?  And how are they related to how the general public views those same stereotypes?

I’m not really after “is life imitating art” or vice versa.  I’m more interested in seeing what, if anything, the people that watch, read, or listen to these stories pick up from them.  What shows, magazines, radio shows, comics, etc are especially harsh?  Which ones are negative and which ones are positive?  What do they say about American culture?

You can really insert your own questions into this.  Any kind of help you can add about some of your favorite shows would help a lot.  Thanks for any input you have.

Where’s the middle?

Posted by theaveragecarter on February 26, 2010

I’ll go ahead and say it.  I don’t like Sarah Palin.  I respect her for being a mom, wife, etc, etc.  But everything publicly about her is utter b.s.  And to hear people praise her for saying this or saying that…well that’s great.  But would you really want her as your president?  I don’t think posting your problems with the media or the government on your Facebook page is appropriate for someone who had/has aspirations of taking the second highest office in the nation.  But there’s enough media out there about her, for her, against her all over the place.  I’m not going to keep going down that road today.  But she is part of the problem with what is going on here.

There is NO middle.  You’re either this or that.  You either want this or you don’t.  Well that’s not how it works.   Read the rest of this entry »

The one thing that one time…

Posted by theaveragecarter on February 22, 2010

There are movies, books, and stories that all ask one very popular hypothetical question; “What would my life be like if I had just done x instead of y?”  It’s not regretting your decision and it’s not wanting your life to be different.  It’s more along the lines of appreciating where you are in life and respecting the decisions that you made.  After all they were important enough at the time, so why would hindsight make that any different? Always learning…

Posted by theaveragecarter on February 19, 2010

I know I’ve talked about this before, but every time I start to read something new or work on a new project I think about the importance of constant learning.  Continued learning doesn’t have to happen in school or at church.  it can happen at your job or at home too.  The only thing that really matters is that you are pushing yourself to Read the rest of this entry »

What to do about lent?

Posted by theaveragecarter on February 17, 2010

Mardi Gras seems to get longer and longer every year and more and more people celebrate the “feasting” season by getting wasted and half naked.  I don’t think that’s really what it’s supposed to be about…more or less a time for over indulgence before the fasting season.  Which is where lent comes in.  Everyone remembers Mardi Gras, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, but I don’t think many of the people that actually celebrate Mardi Gras plan on celebrating lent.  But we’ll see.

Since Mardi Gras is the culmination of the feasting season, Ash Wednesday Read the rest of this entry »
